SMTP Authentication

SMTP Authentication allows for roaming access and reduces the SPAM that increases the traffic overhead on our mail servers by providing verification that mail originates from a valid Lucky ISP user. To use SMTP Authentication, your email software must support this feature. Information on how to configure the most commonly used email clients for Windows and Macintosh that support SMTP Authentication is below.

Netscape and Mozilla users may experience difficulty sending mail, due to the fact that these programs auto-detect the presence of SMTP authentication and, if detected, attempt to use it. To eliminate any problems, please follow the instructions on this page.

Netscape 4.7x users: If you use Netscape version 4.7x, a bug in the program prevents the password from being saved for SMTP Authentication. To eliminate retyping your password each time you send mail, you may want to either (1) upgrade to the recent version of Netscape or (2) disable SMTP authentication. To upgrade, go to Netscape to download the program; to disable SMTP Authentication, click here for instructions.

SMTP Authentication is NOT mandatory. Nor is it necessary to use SMTP Authentication to send and receive email through your Lucky ISP account. However, it is recommended in most cases.

Configuring your Email Client for SMTP Authentication

Note: These instructions assume your email client is already properly configured to access your Lucky ISP email.

Windows

  • Netscape Messenger 4.7x - 4.8
  • Netscape Mail 6.x and 7.x
  • Outlook Express 5 and 6, Incredimail
  • Outlook 98/2000
  • Outlook 2002 (XP)
  • Outlook 97
  • Eudora 4.2.2
  • Eudora 4.3 and higher
  • Macintosh

  • Netscape Mail 6.x and 7.x
  • Outlook Express 5
  • OS X Mail
  • Eudora 4.2.2
  • Eudora 4.3 - 4.8
  • Entourage

    Linux

  • Mozilla 1.3.1
  • Important note about configuring your email program to use SMTP Authentication for your Lucky ISP email

If you have non- Lucky ISP email accounts, we recommend that you configure ONLY Lucky ISP accounts in your email software or use Identities or Profiles (Outlook Express/Netscape/Eudora) to avoid problems that may result with your other email accounts when configuring SMTP Authentication for your Lucky ISP email.

Email programs that do NOT support SMTP authentication

SMTP Authentication is NOT supported in older email programs such as Netscape 3.x, Eudora 3.x or Eudora Lite. If you do not use one of the versions that support SMTP Authentication, you will need to upgrade to a higher version or send mail out through the SMTP mail server of the Internet Service Provider that provides your connection (if it is not Lucky ISP). To upgrade the most common email programs, some links are provided for your convenience: Outlook Express/Internet Explorer -- Netscape -- Eudora.

Note that when upgrading, most programs will keep your settings and messages; however, there are no guarantees that nothing will be lost so we recommend that you back up your messages and address book prior to upgrading.
